Suzhou Sewage Treatment Complex Multifunctional Park
Suzhou Sewage Treatment Complex Multifunctional Park is an innovative urban infrastructure project that revolutionizes the traditional concept of sewage treatment facilities by integrating sustainable technology, cultural heritage, and public recreational spaces. Located in Suzhou Science and Technology City, China, near the historic Taihu Lake, this groundbreaking complex spans 216,000 square meters and features an underground sewage treatment plant measuring 365 by 250 meters, complemented by a 68,000-square-meter wetland and a 33,000-square-meter photovoltaic solar roof. The design, which won the Silver A' Design Award in the City Planning and Urban Design category, draws inspiration from the ancient Lougang Port water conservancy system, seamlessly blending historical water management principles with contemporary sustainable technologies. The facility achieves partial energy self-sufficiency through an integrated system of photovoltaic power generation and waste water heat energy recovery, establishing new benchmarks in environmental sustainability and carbon neutralization. Beyond its primary function as a water treatment facility, the complex serves as a multifunctional public space incorporating an ice rink, natatorium, sports grounds, research and development offices, and an ecological science park. The project's innovative approach transforms what traditionally would be an industrial facility into a city-friendly destination that promotes environmental education, recreation, and cultural preservation while maintaining its essential urban infrastructure role. The complex's reinforced concrete frame structure houses the underground treatment facilities, while the steel-structured photovoltaic solar roof demonstrates the seamless integration of sustainable technology with architectural design.
