Suzhou Creek Waterfront And Campus Landscape
Suzhou Creek Waterfront and Campus Landscape is a significant urban renewal project located in Shanghai's Changning District, encompassing a 900-meter stretch along the Suzhou River that seamlessly integrates campus grounds with public waterfront space. This innovative landscape design, created by Minghua Xue and Lin Wang in 2021, represents a transformative approach to urban waterfront development by merging educational institutional spaces with public recreational areas. The project, spanning approximately 93,600 square meters, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to historical preservation while advancing contemporary urban accessibility needs. Through careful demolition of architecturally incompatible modern structures and the elimination of physical barriers, the design creates a fluid transition between campus and waterfront environments, establishing a unique courtyard in garden, garden in courtyard aesthetic concept. The project's distinctive features include the implementation of gentle slopes to replace stepped transitions, enhanced pedestrian spaces, and an elevated riverside footpath that maintains flood control while improving visual connectivity. Historical elements are thoughtfully incorporated through interpretive signage that showcases Chinese political history and humanities, while an intelligent security system ensures balanced public access with educational functionality. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, successfully transforms what was previously a narrow, utilitarian space into a multifunctional landscape that serves both academic and public interests, establishing a new paradigm for urban waterfront development that respects historical context while meeting contemporary needs.
