SUVAR Chair

SUVAR Chair

SUVAR Chair is an exemplary piece of furniture design that masterfully combines traditional Chinese craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. This meticulously crafted seating solution, designed by Mingbin Yang, embodies the Chinese expression one rafter, one tile through its minimalist yet sophisticated composition, featuring elegant curves and precise angular elements that pay homage to traditional Chinese etiquette. The chair's most distinctive characteristic lies in its complex mortise and tenon joinery system, incorporating 32 individual joints at 12 different angles, necessitating entirely handcrafted production methods including manual tenoning, hole-opening, assembly, trimming, and polishing processes. The design's structural integrity is enhanced through revolving hand-rests and legs, while the rational implementation of mortise and tenon joints ensures both stability and aesthetic refinement. Measuring 720mm in height, 535mm in depth, and 615mm in width, the chair features a innovative separated seat and frame design that enables material versatility in the seating surface. This sophisticated furniture piece, which was developed between December 2014 and February 2017 in China, represents a harmonious fusion of modern Eastern lifestyle aesthetics and traditional craftsmanship, earning recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category for its exceptional design qualities and cultural significance.
