Surveying Chains

Surveying chains are measuring tools used in land surveying to determine distances between two points. They are made up of a series of metal links, typically made of steel, that are connected together to form a long chain. Surveying chains come in various lengths, with the most common lengths being 50 feet and 100 feet. The links of the chain are usually one foot long, and each link is marked with a number to make it easier to count the number of links used in a measurement. Surveying chains are used in conjunction with other surveying tools, such as compasses and levels, to accurately measure distances and angles on a piece of land. They are particularly useful in situations where electronic measuring devices are not practical or reliable, such as in areas with rough terrain or dense vegetation. To use a surveying chain, the chain is laid out between the two points being measured, with each end of the chain held by a surveyor. The surveyor then walks along the chain, counting the number of links used to reach the other end. The distance is calculated by multiplying the number of links by the length of each link. While surveying chains are still used today, they have largely been replaced by electronic measuring devices such as total stations and GPS receivers. However, surveying chains remain an important tool in land surveying and are still used in certain situations where electronic devices are not practical.
