Surround Residence
Surround Residence is an innovative residential interior design project completed in December 2021 in Taichung, Taiwan, that reimagines traditional living space layouts to create a harmonious, flowing environment centered around family connectivity. The 114-square-meter residence, designed by Yi Ju Liao, features a distinctive circular traffic flow pattern that symbolically reinforces family bonds while incorporating several unique architectural and functional elements. The design challenges conventional spatial arrangements by positioning the living room at the rear of the house to optimize natural light and privacy, while introducing an unconventional entrance area that doubles as an aerial yoga space with mirror installations. The project demonstrates exceptional attention to environmental consciousness through its implementation of eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions, including heat-insulating anti-UV glass, optimized air conditioning systems, and LED lighting. Notable design features include a sophisticated gray palette, tinted glass display shelves that create visual transparency, and a curved beam treatment that softens the ceiling's architectural presence. The residence incorporates a creative transformation of high-ceiling staircase areas into functional storage spaces, featuring a distinctive bookshelf wall for displaying comics and models. This Iron A' Design Award-winning project exemplifies innovative space utilization while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and family-centric design principles, successfully creating a living environment that balances aesthetic sophistication with practical functionality.
