Superhero Pop-up Book is an innovative multi-sensory interactive educational tool designed to teach children about COVID-19 through engaging storytelling and interactive paper engineering. This sophisticated design combines traditional pop-up book mechanics with modern electronic circuits, creating an immersive learning experience that helps young learners understand complex scientific concepts through auditory, visual, and tactile interactions. Developed by a team led by Can Zhu at Zhejiang University, the book measures 260mm x 225mm x 50mm and employs advanced paper engineering techniques alongside electronic components such as pressure sensors, photosensitive sensors, and magnetic sensors, all seamlessly integrated using copper tape and laser-cutting technology. Each page presents a carefully crafted scene depicting immune cells as superheroes battling virus monsters, allowing children to engage through various interactive mechanisms including pushing, pulling, rotating, and clicking elements. The design, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition in the Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design category, addresses the crucial challenge of science popularization during the COVID-19 pandemic by making abstract viral concepts tangible and comprehensible for young minds. The book's innovative approach to educational content delivery demonstrates the successful marriage of traditional paper craft with modern electronic interactions, creating a new paradigm in children's educational materials that combines entertainment with scientific learning.
