Sunscreen Preparations

Sunscreen preparations are topical products that are designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. They are used to prevent sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Sunscreen preparations work by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the UV radiation before it can penetrate the skin. They are available in various forms, including lotions, creams, gels, sprays, sticks, and powders. The active ingredients in sunscreen preparations are chemicals that absorb or reflect UV radiation. The most common types of UV filters used in sunscreens are organic (chemical) and inorganic (physical) filters. Organic filters, such as avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone, work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into heat. Inorganic filters, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, work by reflecting and scattering UV radiation. Some sunscreens contain a combination of both types of filters to provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. Sunscreen preparations are classified according to their sun protection factor (SPF), which is a measure of how well they protect the skin from UVB radiation. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection. For example, an SPF 30 sunscreen will block about 97% of UVB radiation, while an SPF 50 sunscreen will block about 98% of UVB radiation. However, it is important to note that no sunscreen can provide 100% protection against UV radiation. To use sunscreen preparations effectively, it is recommended to apply them generously to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. They should be reapplied every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Sunscreen preparations should be used in conjunction with other sun protection measures, such as wearing protective clothing, seeking shade, and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours.
