Sunrays Interactive Space Divider
Sunrays Interactive Space Divider is an innovative cultural heritage-inspired furniture design that seamlessly merges traditional Chinese elements with contemporary interactive functionality. Created by designer Juju Wang in Shanghai during 2018, this sophisticated space divider reinterprets two significant aspects of Chinese culture: the delicate golden leaf and the traditional folding screen. The installation consists of six panels, each measuring 540 x 1875 mm, with a total dimension of 3240 x 1857 mm, featuring transparent glass panels containing an ingenious oil solution that suspends golden leaf particles. When activated through rotation, these panels transform from transparent to semi-transparent states, creating a mesmerizing display of slowly descending golden particles that embody the Chinese proverb thin as paper, light as feather. This dynamic interpretation moves beyond conventional decorative applications of golden leaf, traditionally used in religious and royal architectural elements, by presenting it as the central interactive element. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, showcases exceptional technical innovation in achieving the perfect balance and movement speed of the golden leaf particles, creating a surreal, playful environment. The structure combines metallic framework with glass panels, each containing six blocks of floating golden leaf measuring 480 x 300 mm, representing a sophisticated blend of historical reverence and modern engineering that traces its lineage to the Eastern Zhou period (771-256 BCE) when screens first emerged in Chinese culture.
