Sunmoon Tea Shop
Sunmoon Tea Shop is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of historical architecture with contemporary design elements, situated in Nantou County, Taiwan. The establishment, spanning 69 square meters with 45 square meters of indoor space and 24 square meters of outdoor area, represents a masterful renovation that preserves and celebrates the building's 70-year heritage through thoughtful material selection and spatial planning. The design, conceived by Yu-Ting Chen, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to historical preservation while creating a functional modern tea shop environment. The project's distinctive features include the careful preservation and creative reuse of original loess bricks, which were salvaged during renovation and repurposed for the bar counter facade, complemented by warm solid wood countertops. The design philosophy emphasizes the preservation of temporal elements through the strategic incorporation of pure and simple materials including rusted iron, solid wood, and concrete floors. The space encompasses essential functional areas including a bar, seating area, sales section, and facilities, with innovative structural solutions such as H-beam reinforcement addressing the challenges of the aged building. A particularly noteworthy design element is the integration of plants on the solid wood handle, serving as a natural indicator of the shop's operational status. The project, completed between May 2018 and August 2019, earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in spatial design, material innovation, and cultural preservation. The design's success lies in its ability to maintain the building's historical integrity while creating a contemporary space that serves modern commercial needs, exemplifying the principles of thoughtful architectural adaptation and sustainable design practices.
