Sun-screening Preparations
Sun-screening preparations, also known as sunscreens or sunblock, are products designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. These preparations work by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the UV radiation before it can penetrate the skin. Sunscreens are available in various forms, including lotions, creams, gels, sprays, and sticks, and are often used in combination with other protective measures, such as hats and clothing. The active ingredients in sunscreens are typically organic or inorganic compounds that absorb or reflect UV radiation. Organic compounds, such as avobenzone and octinoxate, absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, while inorganic compounds, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, reflect and scatter UV radiation. Sunscreens are typically labeled with a sun protection factor (SPF), which is a measure of the product's ability to protect against UVB radiation, the type of UV radiation that causes sunburn. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection against UVB radiation. Sunscreen use is recommended by health professionals as a means of reducing the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and other harmful effects of UV radiation. However, it is important to note that sunscreen should not be relied upon as the sole means of sun protection, and that other protective measures, such as seeking shade and wearing protective clothing, should also be employed.
