Sum Teahouse is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional tea culture with contemporary spatial design, completed in 2022 in Nanning, China. This sophisticated establishment, spanning 364 square meters, represents a thoughtful interpretation of Oriental tea culture within a modern context, designed by Denver Hsu. The space is characterized by its meticulous attention to architectural elements, featuring light-colored wood veneer and walnut accents that create a clean, refreshing atmosphere. The design philosophy centers on creating an urban sanctuary that, while situated in a business district, offers respite from city chaos through its elegant and warm ambiance. The spatial organization follows a matrix array distribution, incorporating distinct zones for tea drinking, private boxes, and tea ware display, all seamlessly connected through carefully planned circulation paths. Notable design elements include rigorous wooden veneer grilles, vertical linear elements, and strategically placed green plantings that enhance the natural atmosphere. The project's sophisticated approach to traditional tea culture earned it the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its excellence in spatial innovation and cultural interpretation. The design successfully addresses the challenge of embodying the profound aspects of tea culture - from tea sets and ceremonies to tasting experiences - within a contemporary architectural framework, creating an environment that serves as both a functional space and a cultural medium.
