Suehiro Nagaya Residence

Suehiro Nagaya Residence is a significant architectural renovation project in Osaka, Japan, that exemplifies the thoughtful preservation and modernization of traditional Japanese tenement housing known as Nagaya. This innovative residential design, created by architects Masaaki Takeuchi and Shihoko Koike, addresses the critical challenge of maintaining the cultural heritage of Osaka's traditional community housing while adapting it to contemporary living standards. The project, initiated in November 2011, employs a distinctive approach to renovation that emphasizes six key design principles: the strategic utilization of front yard spaces, clear differentiation between original and new materials, optimization of building proportions to create deeper eaves, efficient water area design, accommodation for DIY modifications, and the implementation of standardized seismic reinforcement methods. The structure, which spans between 59.40 to 75.02 square meters per dwelling unit, maintains the traditional wooden construction and earthen walls characteristic of early 20th-century Nagaya architecture, while incorporating modern amenities. The design philosophy preserves the historical dimensional system dating back to the Edo period, including the traditional four-and-a-half mat room layouts, while introducing contemporary elements that enhance livability. This renovation approach has been successfully implemented across 21 Nagaya buildings comprising 12 units in Osaka City, demonstrating a sustainable model for preserving urban architectural heritage. The project's significance was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2019, acknowledging its innovative approach to architectural preservation and community-focused design.
