Strolling House
Strolling House is an innovative residential architectural design that masterfully explores the intricate relationship between space and environment through a thoughtful Find In Between concept. Created by designers Mingchun Hsu and WenYu Hsieh, this sophisticated dwelling harmoniously divides its 345-square-meter space into three equal portions: a courtyard, public space, and private quarters. The design's distinctive feature lies in its seamless integration with nature, particularly evident in its suburban setting where a verdant courtyard serves as a vital component of the architectural composition. The house employs a remarkable interplay of materials, most notably in its innovative staircase design that serves as both a functional element and a symbolic boundary between public and private spaces. The upper portion of the staircase, constructed from 9-millimeter U-shaped steel plates suspended from the first-floor ceiling, creates a striking contrast with the marble-clad lower section, embodying a delicate balance between lightness and solidity. This architectural masterpiece, completed in October 2018 in Taipei, demonstrates exceptional attention to structural innovation, particularly in its 5.3-meter suspension elements that required extensive testing to achieve optimal stability and safety. The design's thoughtful manipulation of scale, form, material, and shadow creates varying sensory experiences throughout the space, offering residents and visitors alike a profound connection with both the built environment and nature. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design, exemplifies how contemporary residential architecture can successfully merge aesthetic sophistication with functional practicality while maintaining a strong connection to its natural surroundings.
