Stone White Villagers Activity Center
Stone White Villagers Activity Center is an innovative architectural project that exemplifies sustainable rural development and community-centered design through the thoughtful transformation of a ruined stone house into a vibrant public space. Located at the entrance of Feiyue Village in Qichun County, Hubei Province, China, this Bronze A' Design Award-winning structure masterfully integrates existing architectural elements with contemporary design solutions. The project, designed by Minjie Si and Xianfeng Ye, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to historical preservation while introducing modern functionality. The design's most distinctive feature is its innovative approach to structural integration, where a new light-structured white house rises above the original 400mm-thick stone walls, creating a compelling visual dialogue between old and new elements. The center incorporates two existing trees into its design, embracing them with specially designed steel-tube-supported stairs that lead to a new platform serving as the second-floor entrance. The construction, completed during the pandemic period, notably employed low-tech methods and community participation, utilizing steel tubes of varying diameters (30mm, 40mm, and 50mm) as an alternative supporting system. This approach not only proved economically efficient but also enabled local craftsmen to participate in the building process. The project represents a sophisticated balance between preservation and innovation, successfully creating a public infrastructure that serves both practical community needs and cultural preservation goals. The design's emphasis on community engagement, sustainable practices, and architectural innovation has earned it recognition through the prestigious A' Design Award, acknowledging its contribution to rural architectural development and community building.
