SteriPak Low Cost Steriliser Kit

SteriPak Low Cost Steriliser Kit is an innovative medical sterilization solution designed to address critical healthcare needs in resource-limited settings, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This ingenious system transforms end-of-life gas cylinders into functional autoclaves, providing a sustainable and cost-effective method for sterilizing medical and infant care equipment. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Social Design category, comprises a conversion kit that costs less than 10 USD and includes components made from polycarbonate, steel, and silicone. The system's sophisticated valve mechanism directly replaces the original gas bottle fill valve and incorporates pressure regulation, safety features, and air purging capabilities. The spring is precisely calibrated to maintain 15 PSI of steam pressure, achieving the critical temperature of 121°C for 15 minutes required for proper sterilization. Operating with just water and a heat source, the converted autoclave measures 582mm in height and 300mm in diameter, making it suitable for various medical settings. The design not only addresses the immediate need for medical equipment sterilization but also creates local employment opportunities through the conversion process, which can be performed without specialized tools. This sustainable approach reuses 99 percent of the original gas cylinder materials, simultaneously addressing the safety concerns of expired gas cylinders and providing essential medical infrastructure. The system's user-friendly operation involves a simple process of placing items on the base plate, adding water, securing the lid with six clamps, and applying heat, making it accessible to healthcare workers with minimal training.
