Stems CT 03 Coffee Table is an innovative furniture piece that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of natural inspiration and contemporary design, created by Jeffrey A Day. This distinctive coffee table, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017, draws its conceptual foundation from the organic forms of tree stems, leaves, and seed pods. The design features a sophisticated structural framework composed of carefully engineered tubing that serves both as the foundational base and as an artistic element, with stems rising above the table surface to create an additional dimensional aspect. The table's most striking characteristic is its trilogy of oval surfaces, arranged in a hierarchical composition of dominant, sub-dominant, and subordinate elements, representing seed pods in an artistic interpretation. Crafted from bamboo sheet stock and bent tubing, the piece measures 710mm in width, 915mm in depth, and stands 500mm tall. The design underwent several iterations during development, particularly in refining the support structure to achieve optimal structural integrity through the use of thickened gauge materials. This whimsical yet functional piece, developed between May and July 2016 in Seattle, successfully transforms the natural phenomenon of seed dispersal and growth into a practical furniture item, demonstrating an innovative approach to contemporary furniture design. The table's unique aesthetic quality lies in its ability to capture the unpredictable nature of organic growth while maintaining functional practicality, making it a notable example of biomorphic furniture design that received recognition through one of the world's prestigious design competitions, the A' Design Award.
