Statues Of Terracotta
Terracotta statues are a type of sculpture made from baked clay, which has been used for centuries in various cultures around the world. The word terracotta comes from the Italian words terra (meaning earth) and cotta (meaning cooked). These statues are typically made by molding the clay into the desired shape and then firing it in a kiln to harden it. The final product is a durable, reddish-brown ceramic material that can be painted or left unadorned. One of the most famous examples of terracotta statues comes from China's Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE). The Terracotta Army, as it is known, consists of thousands of life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots that were buried with the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. The statues were meant to protect the emperor in the afterlife and were discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well. The Terracotta Army is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction. Terracotta statues have also been found in ancient Greece, Egypt, and the Americas. In Greece, terracotta figurines were often used as votive offerings in temples or as grave markers. In Egypt, terracotta was used to make shabti figurines, which were placed in tombs to serve as servants for the deceased in the afterlife. In the Americas, the Moche culture of Peru created realistic terracotta portraits of their rulers and other important figures. Today, terracotta statues continue to be popular in many parts of the world. They are often used as garden ornaments or as decorative items for the home. In some cultures, they are still used for religious or ceremonial purposes.
