Square Or Circle Chair

Square Or Circle Chair

Square or Circle Chair is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western cultural elements, created by Chinese designer Xin Chen. This transformative piece represents a significant advancement in furniture construction methodology, employing a unique tension-based assembly system that eliminates the need for traditional fastening methods such as glue, nails, or screws. The chair, measuring 432mm x 534mm x 1143mm, is crafted from cherry and walnut woods, incorporating fiber rope and minimal hardware in its construction. Its most distinctive feature lies in its dual functionality - while serving as a fully functional seating solution, it can be completely disassembled and reconstructed to form a visual representation of the Liuqin, a traditional Chinese musical instrument, drawing inspiration from both this Eastern musical heritage and the Western-styled Strozzi chair. The design showcases thoughtful cultural integration through various elements, including the incorporation of Chinese red coloring and the philosophical yin-yang circle motif. This sophisticated piece, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship through its innovative joinery techniques and represents a novel approach to furniture design that emphasizes both practical functionality and cultural storytelling. The chair's ability to be easily dismantled not only facilitates transportation but also creates an interactive experience that encourages users to engage with and appreciate the cultural narrative embedded within its design, making it a significant contribution to contemporary furniture design discourse.
