Square And Round A Multifunctional Stool

Square And Round A Multifunctional Stool

Square and Round A Multifunctional Stool is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese philosophy with contemporary functionality. Created by designer Xu Le and team, this versatile piece draws inspiration from the ancient Chinese concept of orbicular sky and rectangular earth, incorporating this philosophical duality into its practical design. The stool features a sophisticated construction utilizing transparent acrylic for its surface, which deliberately reveals its internal structural elements, creating an engaging visual dialogue between form and function. Standing at 450mm in height with a 320mm square profile, this lightweight yet sturdy piece is crafted primarily from beech wood using advanced wood bending processes. A distinguishing feature of the design is its innovative implementation of the traditional double dovetail key structure, eschewing modern metal fasteners in favor of this time-honored joinery technique. The stool's versatility is demonstrated through its dual functionality - when positioned normally, it serves as a conventional seating solution, but when inverted, it transforms into a side table with an integrated storage compartment for small items. This transformative capability, combined with its flat-pack design for efficient transportation, represents a thoughtful response to contemporary living needs. The design, which earned a Golden A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, showcases exceptional innovation in its structural solutions, particularly in its incorporation of Luban lock principles, which allow for tool-free assembly and disassembly while maintaining structural integrity. The piece's elegant minimalism, coupled with its technical sophistication, creates a harmonious balance between aesthetic appeal and practical functionality, making it particularly suitable for modern urban living spaces.
