Spiral Arches Pavilion

Spiral Arches Pavilion is an innovative architectural installation that exemplifies the evolution of Islamic architectural elements through a dynamic spatial journey. Created by designer Siu Kwok Kin Stanley, this temporary pavilion, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, consists of 100 layers of arches forming an 88-meter-long arcade that chronicles the historical development of Islamic arch designs. The structure, measuring 26 meters wide and 24 meters long, showcases ten distinct arch types arranged in historical sequence, from the ancient Horseshoe Arch to the modern Parabolic Arch, including significant variations such as the Round, Segmental, Tudor, Pointed, Shouldered, Tri-Foil, Multi-Foil, and Ogee arches. Each arch, standing 3.9 meters high and 2.9 meters wide with a thickness of 250mm, is constructed from wood and finished with texture paint, incorporating LED light strips that transform the installation during nighttime viewing. The pavilion's orientation adheres to traditional mosque design principles, directing visitors toward Mecca, while its central courtyard features an abstract fountain artwork symbolizing the journey's origin. This architectural masterpiece demonstrates exceptional innovation in its modular construction system, which enabled rapid assembly within just four days, while its material selection reflects sustainable design considerations. The pavilion creates distinct experiential qualities between day and night, with daylight emphasizing the physical presence and textural qualities of the arches, while evening illumination transforms the structure into a ethereal passage of light strips, offering visitors a profound meditation on the evolution of Islamic architectural heritage.
