Space Center Learning Game

Space Center Learning Game is an innovative educational interactive installation designed to transform library experiences for children through gamification. This sophisticated learning environment, created by designer Chia-Ching Chou, converts library entrance spaces into an immersive space center where children engage with classification numbers through interactive rocket-launching gameplay. The system, which spans 10 meters in width and 3.8 meters in height, employs advanced technology including CCD cameras, projectors, infrared lamps, and directional speakers to create an engaging learning atmosphere. The installation's primary objective is to teach library classification systems through an entertaining and interactive approach, helping young users develop cognitive mapping skills for library navigation. Developed using Unity and enhanced with Photoshop elements, the game guides children through launching number-rockets to discover classification planets, ultimately revealing a practical library map that corresponds to their chosen classifications. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project in the Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design category demonstrates significant innovation in educational design, combining physical infrastructure with digital interaction. The effectiveness of the system has been validated through comprehensive research involving 253 participants, analyzing eight key factors affecting flow experience and perceived learning outcomes through Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling. Despite technical challenges related to motion detection limitations and space constraints, the design successfully creates an educational environment that transforms traditional library orientation into an engaging, interactive experience that promotes self-directed learning and library literacy.
