Sofan Folding Table is an innovative furniture design that reimagines the traditional Korean soban through a contemporary lens, combining cultural heritage with modern functionality. This transformative piece, designed by Qi An, represents a significant evolution in nomadic furniture design, incorporating advanced materials and manufacturing techniques to address contemporary living needs. The design features a distinctive rolling mechanism inspired by traditional Chinese fan structures, allowing the table to be compactly stored when not in use, thereby addressing the spatial constraints of modern urban living. Crafted from toon wood and engineered with precision using CNC cutting technology, the table's components are ingeniously connected via internal steel pipes, creating a seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering. With dimensions of 500mm in width, 500mm in depth, and 260mm in height, the table offers a perfect balance between functionality and space efficiency. The design's versatility is enhanced through its adaptable material combinations, allowing for various aesthetic expressions while maintaining its core functionality. This innovative approach to furniture design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of evolving user behaviors and cultural adaptation. The project, developed between March and September 2022 in Seoul, emerged from extensive research into Chinese residential living patterns and contemporary spatial utilization, utilizing advanced analytical tools such as Noldus software to inform its development. The design's significance lies in its ability to bridge traditional furniture concepts with modern lifestyle requirements, offering a sustainable solution that addresses both practical needs and cultural preservation.
