Slip Gauges

Slip gauges, also known as gauge blocks or Jo blocks, are precision measuring tools used in engineering and metrology. They are rectangular blocks made of high-grade steel or ceramic with extremely tight tolerances and polished surfaces. Slip gauges are used to calibrate and set up precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, dial indicators, and sine bars. They are also used as a reference standard for the measurement of length, flatness, parallelism, and angularity. The blocks are designed to be stacked together to create a precise length or height. They are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses, with each block having a unique measurement value engraved on its surface. The blocks are typically calibrated to an accuracy of a few millionths of an inch or microns, making them highly accurate. To use slip gauges, the blocks are first cleaned and then stacked together to create the desired length or height. The stack is then placed under the measuring instrument and adjusted until the reading matches the known value of the slip gauges. The stack can then be used as a reference standard for further measurements. Slip gauges are an essential tool in precision engineering and are widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing. They are also used in research and development, quality control, and calibration laboratories. With their high accuracy and reliability, slip gauges have become a cornerstone of modern metrology.
