Sliding Plate Fire Dampers

Sliding plate fire dampers are mechanical devices used in ventilation systems to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through ducts. They are designed to close automatically in response to the detection of heat, smoke, or flames, thereby isolating the affected section of the ductwork and preventing the fire from spreading to other areas of the building. The sliding plate fire damper consists of a rectangular frame with a sliding plate that moves horizontally within the frame. The frame is usually made of galvanized steel, while the sliding plate is made of a fire-resistant material such as stainless steel or aluminum. The sliding plate is held in place by a fusible link that melts at a specific temperature, causing the plate to slide shut and seal off the duct. Sliding plate fire dampers are typically installed in areas where ductwork passes through fire-rated walls or floors, such as stairwells, corridors, and mechanical rooms. They are also used in HVAC systems to protect air handling units and other equipment from fire damage. Proper maintenance of sliding plate fire dampers is essential to ensure their effectiveness in the event of a fire. Regular inspections and testing are required to ensure that the dampers are functioning properly and that the fusible links are intact.
