Skin Moisturizers
Skin moisturizers are topical products designed to hydrate the skin by increasing its water content. They are used to alleviate dryness, flakiness, and itching, and to improve the skin's texture and appearance. Moisturizers work by creating a barrier on the skin's surface that slows down water loss and by attracting water from the environment or the deeper layers of the skin. They can be formulated with various ingredients, such as humectants, emollients, occlusives, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents, depending on the skin type, condition, and desired effect. Humectants are substances that attract water molecules and hold them in the skin. Common humectants used in moisturizers include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, and sorbitol. Emollients, on the other hand, are ingredients that fill in the gaps between skin cells and smooth out roughness and flakiness. Examples of emollients are petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, and plant oils. Occlusives are substances that form a physical barrier on the skin and prevent water loss. They are often used in thick, heavy creams and ointments and include ingredients like beeswax, silicone, and dimethicone. Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents are added to moisturizers to protect the skin from environmental damage and to reduce redness and irritation. Moisturizers come in different forms, such as creams, lotions, gels, serums, and balms, and can be used on various parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, and body. They should be applied after cleansing and toning the skin and can be used once or twice a day, depending on the skin's needs. It is essential to choose a moisturizer that matches the skin type and condition, as well as to avoid ingredients that may cause irritation or allergic reactions.
