Skewed Residence

Skewed Residence

Skewed Residence is an innovative architectural masterpiece that exemplifies contemporary residential design through its thoughtful integration of simple aesthetics, minimal material palette, and harmonious connection with nature. Located in Surat, India, this 11,000-square-foot villa represents a departure from conventional urban residential typology, creating an oasis of serenity within the city's bustling environment. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, is distinguished by its strategic facade projections and recessions, emphasizing key areas through sophisticated cantilevering and material interplay. The compound wall features an elegant elevation incorporating Valsadi teak battens softened by cascading creepers, while the spatial programming was carefully considered to address the city's occasional flooding challenges. The architectural composition employs a refined material selection including concrete, white plaster, stone, and wood, with particular attention to Burma teak and Valsadi teak for windows and interior woodwork. A notable technical achievement of the project is its innovative first-floor garden design, realized through post-tensioned slab construction, which creates a seamless connection throughout the house. The residence's distinctive 'skewed' aesthetic, inspired by photographic perspectives, manifests through subtle shifts from linear alignment, creating dynamic vistas that enhance the three-dimensional experience of the space. Completed in 2017 after a six-year development period, this architectural achievement demonstrates excellence in combining functional efficiency with aesthetic sophistication, while maintaining strong environmental considerations and structural integrity.
