Sketch Shelf

Sketch Shelf

Sketch Shelf is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of chaos and order through digital design methodology. This avant-garde storage solution, conceived through algorithmic generation, draws its inspiration from the structural aesthetics of building steel skeletons during construction phases. The design employs a complex network of intersecting lines that, while appearing chaotic from a distance, resolves into a functional shelving system measuring 812 mm × 424 mm × 1630 mm. Created through advanced computational design processes utilizing Grasshopper software, the shelf challenges traditional furniture design paradigms by incorporating randomized geometric patterns that are carefully balanced with ergonomic considerations and manufacturing feasibility. The structure is composed of multiple metal segments precisely engineered to connect seamlessly, creating a versatile storage solution that accommodates both hanging and shelving functions. This groundbreaking design, which won the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a significant advancement in digital fabrication techniques and contemporary furniture design. The shelf's unique aesthetic quality emerges from its ability to maintain functionality while presenting a visually dynamic form that celebrates the intersection of modern technology and artistic expression, effectively challenging conventional perceptions of storage furniture while demonstrating the potential of algorithmic design in creating practical, mass-producible furniture pieces.
