Sisu Hair Salon is an innovative interior design project completed in 2021 in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, that exemplifies minimalist aesthetics and functional efficiency in contemporary hair salon design. The project, conceived and executed by Japanese designer Jun Kameda, transforms a previously dim space within an old steel frame building into a luminous, sophisticated environment through thoughtful architectural intervention and custom furniture design. The salon's distinctive approach challenges traditional Japanese beauty salon conventions by reimagining the typical consultation area, replacing it with a multifunctional white tile-covered rectangular solid that serves as both a work surface and display platform. The space is characterized by its deliberate use of natural light, achieved through the strategic renovation of existing windows and the installation of vertical blinds that modulate daylight intensity. The interior design philosophy employs a white canvas-like backdrop against which custom-designed furniture pieces, crafted from dyed lauan plywood, create striking visual contrast. Notable design elements include iconic chairs and mirrors that share common design vocabularies through curved details and material consistency, establishing a cohesive aesthetic throughout the 61.52-square-meter space. The project's sustainable approach is evident in its minimalist material palette, emphasis on maintainability, and the thoughtful integration of practical features such as urethane-coated polished concrete flooring for efficient cleaning. This innovative design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in spatial planning, material selection, and functional innovation.
