Sir William Dugdale

Sir William Dugdale (1605-1686) was an English antiquary, herald, and scholar who is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the study of medieval history and genealogy. He is best known for his monumental work, The Antiquities of Warwickshire, which was published in 1656 and remains a valuable resource for historians and genealogists today. In addition to his work as an antiquary, Dugdale also served as a herald and was appointed Norroy King of Arms in 1660. He was knighted by Charles II in 1661 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1662. Dugdale's contributions to the study of medieval history and genealogy were significant. His meticulous research and attention to detail set a new standard for historical scholarship in England. He was one of the first historians to use primary sources extensively in his work, and his careful transcription and analysis of medieval documents helped to establish the foundations of modern historical research. His work on the history and genealogy of Warwickshire was particularly influential, and his detailed descriptions of local families, churches, and manors remain an important resource for historians today. As a herald, Dugdale was responsible for overseeing the granting of coats of arms and other heraldic devices. He was known for his expertise in the field of heraldry and was highly respected by his peers. His work as Norroy King of Arms brought him into contact with many of the leading figures of his day, and he played an important role in the restoration of the monarchy in England.
