Sir John Ross

Sir John Ross was a British naval officer and Arctic explorer who made significant contributions to the exploration of the Canadian Arctic. He was born in 1777 in Scotland and joined the Royal Navy at the age of nine. In 1818, he was appointed as the commander of an expedition to search for the Northwest Passage, a sea route through the Arctic that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Ross made several important discoveries during this expedition, including the sighting of the Boothia Peninsula and the discovery of the Gulf of Boothia. However, his expedition was ultimately unsuccessful in finding the Northwest Passage. Ross made a second voyage to the Arctic in 1829, this time with his nephew James Clark Ross. During this expedition, they discovered the magnetic North Pole and made important observations about the movement of glaciers. Ross was knighted in 1834 for his contributions to Arctic exploration. In addition to his Arctic expeditions, Ross was also a prolific writer and artist. He wrote several books about his experiences in the Arctic, including A Voyage of Discovery, Made Under the Orders of the Admiralty, in His Majesty's Ships Isabella and Alexander and Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a Northwest Passage. He also created several sketches and watercolors of the Arctic landscape and the Inuit people he encountered during his expeditions.
