Silk Rhyme Public Space
Silk Rhyme Public Space is an award-winning interior design project that exemplifies the integration of residential amenities with hospitality-inspired service concepts, spanning 528 square meters within a residential building complex in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. Completed in September 2023 after a six-month development period, this multifunctional public space represents a sophisticated approach to communal living environments where the traditional boundaries between private residence and shared facilities are thoughtfully reimagined through strategic spatial planning and aesthetic refinement. The design, conceived by Jeremy Tung in collaboration with The One Design Group, addresses the complex challenge of serving diverse resident needs through a tripartite zoning strategy that organizes the elongated space into distinct functional blocks while maintaining visual and circulatory coherence. The central zone functions as the primary service hub, accommodating high-traffic activities including two service counters, parcel delivery operations, and a café bar, thereby establishing a nexus of daily residential interactions. Adjacent to this core, the design delineates a dynamic zone equipped with fitness facilities, yoga and meditation spaces, bathing amenities, and an outdoor swimming pool, catering to residents' physical wellness requirements. Conversely, the static zone provides contemplative and social environments through its library, piano room, banquet and conference facilities, and flexible multipurpose areas, demonstrating the designer's understanding of the varied temporal rhythms that characterize contemporary residential life. The material palette draws inspiration from the delicate qualities of Chinese silk, employing light-toned stone and environmentally conscious paint finishes that establish a foundation of understated elegance, while marble textures and integrated light strips introduce elements of refined luxury without overwhelming the spatial composition. A particularly noteworthy artistic intervention at the main entrance features a dramatic installation where black sand appears to cascade from the ceiling, gradually accumulating on the floor in a visual metaphor that evokes the Chinese proverb regarding incremental achievement, with the stark chromatic contrast between black sand and white surroundings serving to enhance the space's visual impact and memorability. The technical execution of Silk Rhyme Public Space required careful consideration of structural challenges, particularly addressing high window wind pressure concerns while maintaining the design's aesthetic integrity and ensuring occupant safety through engineering solutions that remain visually unobtrusive. The extensive use of floor-to-ceiling windows on both lateral facades maximizes the interface between interior and exterior environments, facilitating natural light penetration and visual connectivity with adjacent garden landscapes while promoting natural ventilation and spatial transparency. Each functional block incorporates bidirectional circulation paths, allowing residents freedom of movement while maintaining the space's role as a controlled threshold between public and private domains. The design's hotel-inspired management philosophy manifests not only in the spatial organization but also in the attention to experiential details that suggest a level of service and care extending beyond conventional residential common areas. This approach reflects broader trends in contemporary residential design where communal facilities are increasingly conceived as extensions of private living spaces rather than merely supplementary amenities, thereby enhancing residents' quality of life and fostering community engagement. The integration of traditional Chinese cultural elements, particularly the silk motif and courtyard-inspired spatial relationships, demonstrates a design methodology that honors cultural heritage while embracing contemporary functional requirements and aesthetic sensibilities. Silk Rhyme Public Space received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, which recognized the project's creative synthesis of functionality and aesthetics, its innovative use of materials and spatial organization, and its contribution to advancing standards within the interior design discipline. This recognition affirms the design's professional execution and its potential to influence evolving paradigms in residential common space design, particularly regarding the integration of diverse programmatic requirements within cohesive spatial narratives. The project exemplifies how thoughtful interior design can transform utilitarian spaces into environments that enhance daily life, support community formation, and provide residents with amenities that extend their domestic experience into shared territories, ultimately contributing to more holistic and satisfying residential environments that address the multifaceted needs of contemporary urban dwellers.
