Signal Lanterns

Signal lanterns, also known as railway lanterns or trainman lanterns, are portable lighting devices that were historically used in the railroad industry to communicate signals between trains and station personnel. These lanterns were typically made of metal or glass and were designed to emit a bright, steady light that could be seen from a distance. Signal lanterns were commonly used to indicate whether a train should stop, proceed with caution, or slow down, and were an important safety feature in an era before modern communication technologies. Signal lanterns were typically operated by train conductors or other railway personnel, who would hold the lantern in a specific position to convey a particular signal. For example, holding the lantern with the red lens facing forward would signal to an approaching train that it should stop, while holding the lantern with the green lens facing forward would indicate that the train could proceed with caution. Some signal lanterns also had a white lens, which could be used to indicate that a train should slow down. While signal lanterns are no longer used as extensively in the railroad industry due to advances in technology, they remain an important part of railroad history and are often collected by enthusiasts. Many vintage signal lanterns are highly sought after by collectors, and can be found in antique shops and online marketplaces.
