Sign Language Situational Display Stand
Sign Language Situational Display Stand is an innovative artistic display system that merges functional design with symbolic communication, created by professor and designer Naai-Jung Shih. This sophisticated installation piece, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, represents a unique intersection between visual communication and display functionality. The design consists of a modular system featuring branches composed of moving palms and gestures, drawing inspiration from the visual-manual modality of sign language to create a silent yet profound dialogue between the displayed objects and viewers. Available in multiple sizes, with larger units measuring 20cm x 20cm x 20cm and smaller units at 8cm x 8cm x 8cm, the stand employs a complex grid structure combined with parametric design principles. The construction involves a sophisticated two-part configuration comprising a base grid structure and square instance fill-ins, manufactured using advanced 3D parametric programming and rapid prototyping technology. A distinctive feature of this design is its meticulous finishing, which includes the application of gold foil by traditional Buddhism sculpture artisans, requiring exceptional skill due to the numerous concave surfaces. The stand's versatility allows it to showcase various items from candies to personal collections, with the ability to rotate and combine multiple units in different configurations. This adaptability, coupled with its metaphorical connection to sign language, creates an elegant platform where the displayed objects become part of a broader artistic narrative, similar to a conductor performing before an audience.
