Shinjuku Gardens, Tokyo, Japan Car Park, Gallery
Shinjuku Gardens, Tokyo, Japan Car Park, Gallery is an innovative architectural intervention that reimagines the conventional parking structure as a harmonious fusion of urban infrastructure, natural landscape, and cultural space in the heart of Tokyo's bustling Shinjuku district. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project, designed by Cheungvogl Architects, transforms a standard two-story parking facility into a multifunctional space that addresses both practical urban needs and environmental concerns. The structure, spanning 2,200 square meters of site area with 3,200 square meters of parking space and 1,800 square meters of public accessible gardens, employs advanced pre-fabricated concrete construction techniques to maximize efficiency. The design's most distinctive feature is its living facade system, which incorporates carefully selected indigenous wild flowers and plants that create a naturally evolving biotope, effectively turning the building's exterior into a dynamic, seasonal canvas that changes colors throughout the year. The innovative use of car lifts instead of traditional ramps optimizes the parking capacity while reducing traffic congestion and waiting times, resulting in more than double the parking spaces compared to conventional layouts. The interior spaces serve a dual purpose by functioning as an exhibition venue for both emerging and established artists, with street art displayed on columns, floors, and ceilings, creating an unexpected cultural destination within a utilitarian structure. The project's environmental consciousness is evident in its green wall system, which helps reduce CO2 emissions and contributes to urban biodiversity, while its compact 54m x 33m footprint occupies 22% less site coverage than traditional parking layouts, allowing for improved light penetration and air circulation in the dense urban environment.
