Shenzhen Shangsha Kindergarten is an innovative educational facility completed in 2023, distinguished by its unique architectural approach that reimagines the conventional kindergarten spatial experience through a canyon-inspired design. Located in Shangsha Village, this 7,304.38-square-meter structure stands as a remarkable example of contemporary educational architecture, featuring a sophisticated interplay of light, space, and form. The design employs a frame shear wall structure system with irregular folded walls and strategically positioned columns, creating dynamic interior spaces that enhance children's visual and spatial experiences. The four-story building incorporates 18 classrooms distributed across three floors, with an ingenious alternating north-south corridor arrangement that generates double-height spaces, offering children varying spatial experiences as they move through the building. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, addresses the community's need for cultural facilities while introducing an innovative architectural solution that breaks away from traditional educational building designs. The kindergarten's distinctive features include three different types of activity spaces embedded within its complete building form, with carefully designed gaps that allow natural light to penetrate at different times of the day, creating what has been termed a container of light. The structure's technical sophistication is evident in its folded walls, which are 300mm thick reinforced concrete, and folding columns offset at angles between 10 and 20 degrees, demonstrating exceptional architectural engineering while maintaining constructional practicality.
