Shell Homage Hangers

Shell Homage Hangers

Shell Homage Hangers is an innovative and environmentally conscious design solution that reimagines everyday storage through a sustainable lens, representing a significant advancement in eco-friendly furniture accessories. This groundbreaking design, created by Rania Elkalla, transforms discarded egg, nut, and cacao shells into functional, biodegradable wall-mounted hangers that feature secret storage compartments. The collection comprises three distinct sizes - small (15 x 9 cm), medium (17.5 x 11.5 cm), and large (30 x 10.5 cm) - each crafted from a revolutionary 100% natural biodegradable plastic composite. The organic, pebble-inspired forms not only serve practical storage needs but also create an aesthetically pleasing, customizable wall arrangement that can be overlapped and arranged according to individual preferences. The design's innovative material composition, developed through collaboration with material engineers at the Technical University of Berlin, demonstrates exceptional structural properties while maintaining complete biodegradability. This groundbreaking approach to sustainable design earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Accessories, Hardware and Materials Design category, acknowledging its contribution to environmental consciousness in product design. The hangers' unique manufacturing process involves collecting and processing discarded shells, combining them with organic adhesives, and utilizing various production techniques including extrusion, pressing, and injection molding, resulting in a material that exhibits characteristics similar to stone or ceramic while maintaining complete biodegradability.
