Sharing The Dwelling Free Shelters

Sharing The Dwelling Free Shelters is an innovative social design solution that transforms traditional advertising billboards into dual-purpose structures providing shelter for homeless individuals while maintaining their commercial advertising functionality. This groundbreaking design, created by Chinese designers Kang Shan, Ding Wang, Mengyao Pei, and Yanan Zhou, represents a significant advancement in addressing urban homelessness through sustainable and mutually beneficial design solutions. The structure, measuring 1500mm x 3000mm x 1500mm, is constructed using lightweight materials including nylon and plastics, featuring a convertible mechanism that allows the billboard to transform into a protective shelter. The design's ingenuity lies in its reciprocal benefit system, where homeless individuals can earn their accommodation by maintaining and cleaning the billboards, creating a sustainable model of social support that appeals to both commercial interests and humanitarian needs. The shelter's transformation is achieved through a sophisticated yet simple mechanism: users can activate a top-mounted button to unlock the billboard, pull it groundward, and configure it into a rectangular living space with sliding panels for entry. This design, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Public Awareness, Volunteerism, and Society Design category, exemplifies how thoughtful design can address complex social issues while maintaining commercial viability. The project, developed between October 2018 and February 2019 at Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, demonstrates how design innovation can create practical solutions that benefit multiple stakeholders while addressing pressing social challenges.
