SH House Residential

SH House Residential

SH House Residential is an award-winning architectural renovation project located in Sever do Vouga, Portugal, that exemplifies the harmonious integration of contemporary design elements with historical preservation. The project, completed in 2016 after an eight-year development period, encompasses a 45-square-meter dwelling distributed across two floors, masterfully balancing traditional architecture with modern aesthetics. The design's distinctive feature lies in its preservation of the building's primitive outline while introducing weathering steel elements around window voids, creating a sophisticated visual hierarchy that enhances the overall architectural composition. The ground floor houses social spaces that maintain a fluid connection with the outdoor environment, while the upper level accommodates private quarters including a bedroom and bathroom. The architectural language employs a minimalist approach characterized by clean lines and clear colors, effectively maximizing spatial perception and creating an enhanced sense of openness. The material palette combines traditional elements such as stone and wood with contemporary components including epoxy resin, plasterboard, and concrete, resulting in a cohesive design that respects its viticultural surroundings. The project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in sustainable renovation practices, showcasing how thoughtful architectural intervention can preserve historical essence while introducing contemporary functionality. The design's success lies in its careful debugging of existing elements, retaining only the essential components while introducing strategic modifications that enhance the building's relationship with its environment.
