Shōtei Hokuju

Shōtei Hokuju was a prominent Japanese artist who made significant contributions to the world of art during the Meiji period. He was born in Tokyo in 1871 and began his artistic career as a student of the renowned ukiyo-e artist, Kobayashi Kiyochika. Hokuju's works are characterized by a unique blend of traditional Japanese elements and modern aesthetics, which earned him widespread recognition and admiration from the global art community. Hokuju's most famous works include his color woodblock print series titled “Modern Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” which was inspired by Hokusai's iconic series of the same name. Hokuju's version, however, features modern landscapes and cityscapes, such as Tokyo Bay and Yokohama Port, which showcase Japan's rapid modernization during the Meiji period. In addition to his woodblock prints, Hokuju was also known for his oil paintings, which were heavily influenced by Western art styles. His painting Fukagawa Hachiman is a prime example of this, featuring a realistic depiction of a Shinto shrine in Tokyo. Hokuju's Ukiyo-e series A Selection of Beauty is also noteworthy, featuring elegant and graceful depictions of women in traditional Japanese dress. Despite his success, Hokuju's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1944. Nevertheless, his legacy lives on through his works, which continue to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts around the world.
