Sergers
A serger, also known as an overlock machine, is a type of sewing machine that is designed to create finished seams on fabric edges. Unlike traditional sewing machines, which use a single thread to create a seam, sergers use multiple threads to create a strong, durable, and professional-looking seam. Sergers are commonly used in the garment industry, as well as by home sewers who want to create high-quality finished garments. Sergers work by trimming the fabric edge as it sews, while simultaneously wrapping the cut edge with thread to prevent fraying. The result is a clean and finished edge that is both strong and attractive. Sergers can be used to create a variety of different seam finishes, including flatlock, rolled hem, and coverstitch. One of the main advantages of using a serger is speed. Because sergers use multiple threads and can trim and finish the edge in one pass, they can sew much faster than traditional sewing machines. Additionally, sergers are designed to handle a wide variety of fabrics, including knits, wovens, and even delicate fabrics like silk and chiffon. While sergers are incredibly useful tools, they can be more difficult to use than traditional sewing machines. They require a bit more setup and adjustment, and the threading process can be tricky. However, with practice and patience, anyone can learn to use a serger to create professional-looking finished seams on their sewing projects.
