Sense Hair Studio is an innovative interior design project that reimagines the traditional hair salon concept through a sophisticated interplay of materials and spatial dynamics. Located in Jiangsu, China, this architectural intervention, completed in May 2020, demonstrates a masterful fusion of existing and new elements, where white real stone coating deliberately contrasts with exposed concrete surfaces of the original structure. The design, conceived by Xiang Ji, draws inspiration from the aesthetic sensibilities of Santorini's architecture, particularly the Istoria hotel, translating Mediterranean influences into a contemporary Asian context. The space eschews complicated circulation patterns in favor of directed interactions, creating purposeful zones for various salon activities including waiting, changing, hair washing, and styling. The project's distinctive approach lies in its artistic expressiveness and emotional resonance, moving beyond mere functional requirements to create an immersive experience. A significant technical achievement of the design involves the careful preservation and integration of the original building's weathered concrete surfaces, which required extensive material experimentation to achieve authentic textural qualities. The studio's layout prioritizes universal visual connectivity, ensuring that clients seated at any position can engage with the space's aesthetic elements. This innovative hair salon design, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2021, represents a departure from conventional commercial space design, emphasizing artistic expression while maintaining functional efficiency. The project successfully breaks away from traditional beauty salon paradigms, creating an environment that balances practical requirements with aesthetic sophistication, ultimately fostering a more engaging and meaningful client experience.
