Selfors Housing
Selfors Housing is a meticulously rehabilitated modernist villa located in Mo I Rana, Norway, exemplifying sustainable architectural renovation through its thoughtful transformation of a 1960s structure. The three-story, 200-square-meter residence demonstrates exceptional architectural sensitivity in reconciling contemporary design elements with mid-century modernist principles, following a partial reconstruction necessitated by a 1980s prefabricated intervention. The design's centerpiece is an innovative central staircase that doubles as a natural ventilation shaft, facilitating air circulation throughout the building's multiple levels. The structure's environmental consciousness is evident in its sophisticated passive solar design, featuring a south-facing glass facade that optimizes solar gain, while the central ventilation system ensures efficient temperature regulation. The project, completed in 2014, showcases remarkable attention to sustainable practices through its upcycling approach, preserving the original wooden construction while introducing new facades, windows, and reconfigured interior spaces. The residence's harmonious integration with its natural surroundings is enhanced by carefully designed microclimatic spaces that provide sheltered outdoor areas for inhabitants. The building's dimensions of 9600mm x 11800mm are thoughtfully proportioned to maximize spatial efficiency while maintaining aesthetic balance. This architectural achievement, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2022, represents a significant contribution to sustainable residential architecture, demonstrating how historical preservation can be successfully merged with contemporary environmental considerations and modern living requirements.
