Self Help Graphics and Art Rebranding is a comprehensive visual identity redesign project that exemplifies the intersection of cultural heritage and contemporary design principles in community-focused artistic expression. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project, created by designer David Jimenez, represents a sophisticated reimagining of a prominent East Los Angeles community arts center's visual identity, drawing inspiration from ancient Aztec and Maya hieroglyphic grid structures to create a custom typeface and logotype that bridges historical significance with modern design sensibilities. The rebranding initiative, executed through a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques including letterpress and screen printing on premium Rives BFK paper, demonstrates exceptional attention to cultural authenticity while maintaining contemporary appeal. The design solution encompasses multiple touchpoints, including large-format posters measuring 28 by 40 inches and a newspaper booklet format of 11.378 by 14.9606 inches, all produced through a meticulous combination of screen printing, laser cutting, and letterpress techniques. This thoughtful approach to visual communication successfully addresses the challenge of creating an identity system that honors the organization's deep roots in Chicana/o and Latinx artistic traditions while appealing to diverse, contemporary audiences.
