Sekonj Garden Urban Space Design
Sekonj Garden Urban Space Design is an innovative urban landscape intervention located in Iran that exemplifies the successful transformation of a remnant garden space into a vibrant public realm. This thoughtfully conceived project, designed by Eskandarpour, Saeidizade and Sherafati, represents a harmonious blend of traditional Iranian garden principles with contemporary urban design approaches. The design's primary strength lies in its preservation of existing mature trees while introducing new spatial arrangements that foster social interaction and community engagement. The three-cornered garden features a sophisticated circulation system with a 6-meter wide main axis incorporating a water channel, leading to a sunken central circular space that creates an intimate gathering area. The project's materiality is anchored in the contextual use of red brick, employed creatively from ground plane to vertical elements, establishing a cohesive visual language throughout the space. Notable design elements include varied seating arrangements with lengths ranging from 3 to 12 meters, and a contemporary interpretation of traditional domes in the children's play area, featuring seven continuous soft domes varying in height from 40 to 80 centimeters. The project, completed in 2019, demonstrates exceptional attention to sustainability and local context through its use of hand-crafted elements and site-specific construction techniques. The design has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, acknowledging its success in creating an inclusive, dynamic urban space that effectively balances preservation with innovation, while promoting social interaction and environmental sustainability.
