Seaport City Shopping Mall
Seaport City Shopping Mall is an innovative architectural and interior design project completed in 2017 in Xiaolan, China, spanning an impressive 80,000 square meters across eight stories and featuring a three-level underground parking facility. The design, conceptualized by Davis Chow, represents a sophisticated fusion of artistic elements and functional spatial planning, characterized by its signature triangular star motif and distinctive Hair Running Cut design concept implemented throughout the structure. The mall's architectural language is defined by its innovative use of overlapping tiles and rectangular aluminum hanging poles in the atrium, creating dynamic layered shapes that facilitate natural light penetration while establishing a contemporary aesthetic atmosphere. The interior design demonstrates exceptional attention to human-centric facilities, incorporating specialized amenities such as accessible restrooms, parent-child facilities, and advanced smoking areas with integrated ventilation systems. The project's material palette combines marble, tiles, metal, and acrylic, showcasing a harmonious blend of durability and visual appeal. The design successfully overcame significant challenges in integrating diverse cultural perspectives, bringing together Japanese architects, Chinese engineers, and Hong Kong interior designers. Each floor features thematically distinct wall paintings that reflect various cultural concepts, contributing to the mall's identity as both a commercial space and an artistic destination. The project, which received the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2019, demonstrates exceptional achievement in spatial organization, incorporating innovative design elements while maintaining practical functionality for diverse user groups. The design's success is evident in its careful consideration of local consumer habits, efficient pedestrian flow management across its multiple atriums, and the seamless integration of artistic elements with practical retail requirements.
