Scroll Hut Pavilion

Scroll Hut Pavilion is an innovative architectural installation that exemplifies the seamless integration of biomimicry principles with contemporary design technology. This transformative pavilion, designed by Hiroyuki Futai and realized through collaboration with EP3, draws inspiration from the natural unfurling pattern of fern fronds, translating this biological mechanism into an adaptive architectural space. The structure consists of 40 independent scroll systems, each equipped with sensors and actuators, creating a dynamic interplay between form and function. During daylight hours, the scrolls extend to form a translucent roof shade, while at night, they retract to serve as bracket lights, demonstrating a sophisticated response to environmental conditions. The pavilion's dimensions of 2300mm in height, 2310mm in width, and 5630mm in length create an intimate yet impactful spatial experience. What makes this design particularly noteworthy is its decentralized approach to environmental responsiveness, where each scroll unit operates independently with its own transformation system, including sensors, stepping motor, LED lamps, and control board. This innovative approach earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its contribution to advancing architectural design through technology integration. The project represents a significant achievement in sustainable design, accomplished within a modest budget of $3,000, utilizing a combination of common materials and custom-fabricated components, while demonstrating how traditional design motifs can be reimagined through contemporary technological applications to create adaptive, functional architecture.
