Schwarzwald Recipe Bakery
Schwarzwald Recipe Bakery is an innovative interior design project that masterfully reimagines the essence of German bakery culture within an urban Asian context, completed in 2017 in Taipei City. The 120-square-meter retail space, designed by Matt Liao and his team at D.More Design Studio, draws profound inspiration from the mystique of Germany's Black Forest (Schwarzwald) region, skillfully translating traditional German architectural elements into contemporary design language. The space is architecturally distinguished by its strategic use of dark atmospheric backgrounds and two centrally positioned wooden cabin structures that house the bakery's offerings, creating an immersive forest-like environment enhanced by suspended red berry-inspired lighting fixtures. The design demonstrates exceptional material integration, incorporating steel, solid wood moldings, wood veneer sheets, black mirrors, vinyl, and tiles to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. A particularly noteworthy design element is the innovative interpretation of traditional German timber frame patterns, which have been reimagined as modern steel frame shelving systems and integrated into the storefront facade. The space's functionality is carefully considered within its nearly square 11-meter by 11-meter footprint, effectively serving both morning coffee patrons and dining customers throughout the day. This sophisticated interpretation of German cultural elements in a contemporary retail context earned the project a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its excellence in spatial design, cultural integration, and innovative material application.
