Scene Graph

Scene Graph is a data structure used in computer graphics and design applications to represent and organize the spatial and hierarchical relationships between objects in a virtual scene. It is a directed acyclic graph (DAG) that consists of nodes and edges, where nodes represent the objects or entities in the scene, and edges represent the parent-child relationships between them. The scene graph provides a logical and efficient way to manage the complexity of 3D scenes by allowing designers and developers to structure the scene in a hierarchical manner, with each node inheriting properties and transformations from its parent. This hierarchical organization enables the easy manipulation and rendering of the scene, as changes made to a parent node automatically propagate to its children. Scene graphs also facilitate the application of various techniques, such as culling, level of detail (LOD), and spatial partitioning, to optimize rendering performance. They are widely used in fields like computer-aided design (CAD), architecture, video game development, and virtual reality to create and interact with complex 3D environments. Interestingly, the concept of scene graphs originated in the early days of computer graphics, with one of the first known implementations being the PHIGS (Programmer's Hierarchical Interactive Graphics System) standard in the 1980s.
