Sati Comic Book
Sati Comic Book is a culturally significant graphic narrative that explores the historical Indian practice of Sati through a unique artistic lens, combining traditional Indian storytelling with a distinctive Van Gogh-inspired art style. Created by Indian designer Simran Tapadia, this innovative comic book presents the emotional journey and psychological perspective of women who faced the ritual of Sati, departing from conventional historical depictions to offer a more nuanced and empathetic portrayal. The work, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, consists of 20 pages arranged in 9 spreads, each measuring 6.9 x 9.8 inches. The narrative unfolds through carefully crafted splash pages that utilize a vibrant color palette and expressive brushwork reminiscent of Post-Impressionist techniques, creating an emotional resonance that transcends traditional comic book storytelling. Developed between October and December 2018, the project emerged from extensive research into historical accounts, including British colonial officer diaries documenting Sati experiences.
