Sapfo Extra Virgin Olive Oil is an award-winning packaging design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of ancient Greek cultural heritage with contemporary design aesthetics. Created by Greek designer Chris Trivizas, this distinctive olive oil packaging features a sophisticated combination of glass, thread, and thoughtful symbolism that pays homage to its namesake, Sappho, the renowned poetess from Mytilene whom Plato referred to as the tenth muse. The design's most striking feature is its hand-knitted net wrapping, which makes each bottle unique while symbolically referencing the beautifying techniques employed by women in ancient times, particularly for their hair care rituals. The 500ml glass bottle, measuring 77mm in width and 180mm in height, incorporates silkscreen printing techniques and is complemented by a specially designed tag inspired by ancient pottery fragments. The packaging's visual language is carefully constructed through matte glass painting and a deliberately chosen color palette that reflects both the darkness of olives and the golden radiance of the oil itself. This meticulous attention to detail extends to the product's contents, as the extra virgin olive oil is sourced from the mountainous and arid regions of Mytilene (Lesvos), ensuring premium quality. The design, which was developed between September 2016 and March 2017, earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to combining functional efficiency with cultural storytelling. The project demonstrates how packaging design can effectively bridge historical heritage with contemporary market demands while maintaining a strong connection to local traditions and product authenticity.
